Seminar Abstract

Offshore wind is a key tool in building a clean energy economy: a technology that utilizes our local skills and resources to continue our journey away from high-carbon fossil fuel power sources to clean and renewable energy sources. Building wind farms in the waters south of Massachusetts will not only allow us to shift our local power sources by adding to our growing clean portfolio of resources like solar but will also allow us to establish ourselves as leaders for the nation and world and create new career paths for rising new generations from our communities. This talk will walk through the past, present and future of offshore wind and how it fits into our evolving energy system while describing the practical steps needed to permit, develop and build an offshore wind farm and the unique opportunities and challenges this new energy technology faces.

Seth Kaplan is the Director of Development and Permitting for Mayflower Wind Energy and serves on Mayflower’s Management Team. Previously, Seth managed Government and Regulatory Affairs for EDP Renewables across the Eastern U.S., working on both policy and commercial strategy and execution. Before that, he worked at the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston for 16 years in various capacities, where his last assignment was as Vice President for Climate Policy. His prior offshore wind work included deep involvement in the stakeholder process around the Cape Wind project and serving on the Federal advisory committee that planned the creation and launch of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the regulator of offshore wind in federal waters. He lives in Brookline Massachusetts with his wife (a law professor), children, and a variety of pets.
