About our curriculum

All youth and teen classes at The Lab are lead by experienced comedians and theater educators with a passion for comedy. Our curriculum is designed to teach both new and experienced students the principles of comedy and collaboration.

Stand Up Comedy for 7th-12 graders is lead by professional stand up performer and producer Erin Dohony and the curriculum has been co-created with Shyla Hungerford, the executive director of The Lab. This class takes the supportive atmosphere of play from our improv classes and applies it to the art of stand up comedy. Over six weeks students will learn the structure of jokes, work together to find their comedic voice, and practice standing on stage and delivering their own material.

Who can join?

This class is perfect for any student interested in comedy. For experienced young improvisers, this class will broaden their toolkit and add confidence to their repertoire. However, this would also make a great first, or stand-alone, class for students who just want to try stand up comedy.

Class Schedule

This is a six week class on Sundays 5:30-7, November 9th - December 21st. There will be an optional end of class show scheduled during the session.

About Erin Dohony

Erin has performed and produced comedy professionally for the past 10 years. At Temple University, she began as an actor, writer and Art Director for Temple Smash. After graduation Erin performed stand up comedy all over. In Atlanta, alongside performing stand up, Erin also worked in childcare for three years. Recently she come home to Ambler, where she now produces the popular standup showcase, Sunday School Dropouts at The Lab. Her experiences as a nanny unveiled a truth: kids are hilarious without trying. In this four week course, Erin will guide each student toward finding their voice and bringing their jokes to the stage.
