The Embassy of Ireland invites you to join us on the eve of St Brigid’s Day, Thursday 31 January 2019, for a special event with panel discussion focusing on the women who have shaped both Ireland and the world, including Irish writers, suffragettes and entrepreneurs and highlighting national and international Irish female creativity and innovation.

Acclaimed Irish writers Eilís Ní Dhuibhne and Martina Devlin will discuss their recent articles and books on the women who have shaped Ireland, while Antonia Hart will discuss her PhD research at Trinity College on nineteenth century Irish female entrepreneurship and role models.The discussion will be moderated by Elke D'hoker, a leading academic in the research of modern and contemporary Irish and British fiction.

In addition, you will be invited to explore a brand new “Blazing A Trail” Panel Exhibition, which is based on a “herstory” research project and will showcase the achievements of Irish women diaspora around the world since the 1850s.

About St Brigid’s Day

This year, the Embassy of Ireland initiated an annual celebration of St Brigid’s Day, which is marked in Ireland on 1 February. Saint Brigid of Kildare is one of Ireland's three patron saints and is Ireland’s most important female saint. An important relic of hers (The Saint Brigid’s mantle) is kept in the Holy Saviour Cathedral, Bruges (Belgium).

Eilís Ní Dhuibhne will talk about her recent Irish Times article – “1954: a good year for an Irish woman writer to be born” and a reading from her acclaimed new memoir – “12,000 Days”
Martina Devlin will talk about her new book “Truth and Dare - stories about women who shaped Ireland”
Antonia Hart back again in Brussels with her Irish Research Council funded PhD research on “nineteenth century Irish female entrepreneurs”

About the "Blazing A Trail” Exhibition

‘Blazing a Trail: Lives and Legacies of Irish Diaspora Women’ is a new exhibition celebrating the lives and legacies of 21 pioneering Irish diaspora women of the 19th and 20th centuries who blazed a trail in a wide range of fields. The exhibition is a collaboration between EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, Herstory and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. More information at http://www.herstory.ie .
