Squirrel Fur Skinning Workshop
Overview
Squirrel Fur Skinning Workshop with Rob at The Insect Asylum
Join us at The Insect Asylum for a hands-on squirrel fur skinning workshop guided by professional taxidermist Rob! Learn the foundational skills behind ethical taxidermy and specimen preparation using sustainably sourced squirrel specimens.
Rob will guide you step-by-step through the skinning process, focusing on technique, safety, and proper handling. At the end of class, a hard tan will be applied, making your squirrel skin stiff. After one week of drying, you can pick it up—your skin will hold whatever shape you put it in, and you can choose to keep it or break it.
All tools and materials are provided, and participants leave with their prepared squirrel skin.
Note: This workshop involves working with real specimens in a respectful, scientific context. Recommended for adults or mature teens with an accompanying adult.
Your ticket also ensures general admission to the museum - Come learn, create, and explore the craft of taxidermy with us at The Insect Asylum!
Accessibility note: Our current classroom spaces are not wheelchair accessible. However, we’re happy to arrange an accessible classroom setup for butterfly pinning on a case-by-case basis. Please email us at theinsectasylum@gmail.com with any accessibility needs prior to your class.
Additional note: Families are welcome! Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. If you or your child would prefer to observe rather than participate, we’d love to have you. Guardian/observer tickets are available online or at the front desk.
