Description
Performance tuning uses troubleshooting techniques that you can adopt for your own. It’s not just trial-and-error, and it’s definitely not magic unicorn dust. You will learn to recognize the difference between symptom and root cause to address the real underlying issue. Dive deeper into some of the common problems that are the most difficult to prevent, diagnose, and correct.
Some of the troubleshooting methods covered will include waits and queues, performance monitoring, baselining, and benchmarking. Equally as important as learning what to do, you will also learn how to avoid common pitfalls -- or what not to do.
We will also take an in-depth look at the new performance tuning tools coming in SQL Server 2016: Query Store, Live Query Statistics, and Query Plan Comparisons. These tools are going to change how SQL professionals identify and tune problem queries. They are the biggest change to performance tuning since Dynamic Management Views were introduced in SQL Server 2005.
Full list of topics:
· Configuring SQL Server for Optimal Performance
Memory, parallelism, tempdb
· Diagnosing Poor Performance with Wait Statistics
· Tuning Queries with Execution Plans
· Indexing for Performance
· Identifying and Remediating Plan Regression With Query Store and Query Plan Comparison
· Using Live Query Statistics to identify Bottlenecks in Query Plans
Learning Objectives:
· Learn how to identify and fix the root cause of performance problems rather than just reacting to the symptoms
· Understand how to proactively prevent common performance problems by configuring SQL Server to perform optimally
· Discover how the new performance tuning features of SQL Server 2016 can take your performance tuning skills to whole new levels of greatness
· Gain the confidence to know you can take on any performance problem and come out looking like the hero.
Session Prerequisites:
· Basic familiarity with Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and query plans
· A desire to be the person everyone looks for when there is a performance issue
