Sprouting in GreenPoint Opening Reception
Overview
Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) by Garde is pleased to announce Sprouting in GreenPoint, an exhibition of new work by artists from the studio of celebrated Japanese artist Tomokazu Matsuyama. The exhibition brings together seven artists whose practices span different media and conceptual inquiries, exploring themes of memory, perception, rhythm, nature, and the invisible through painting and mixed forms.
Participating artists include Mariko Fujimoto, Tsukasa Kanawa, Kazuki Onohara, Ryuichiro Kawaue, Hosanna Amemiya, Gunoterre, and Keiko Fukuda. Collectively, these artists embody the hope and energy of an upcoming generation of Japanese artists, cultivated within the soil of Matsuyama’s studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The prominence and global presence of the studio provide fertile ground for working artists to hone their skills, develop new perspectives, and learn from one another in a collaborative environment.
By utilizing his studio as a platform for exchange and dialogue, Matsuyama creates opportunities for diasporic artists to connect, reflecting on the isolation he experienced as a young artist and countering it by fostering a sense of community. Sprouting in GreenPoint continues this spirit by highlighting emerging Japanese artists, inviting audiences to encounter creative voices that are taking root in New York City and flourishing locally and internationally.
