Sprinkles of Surprise and Delight: Bringing Joy and Play into Higher Ed

Danny Smith

Professor, School of Marketing

George Brown College, Toronto, Canada

Join Danny Smith for an interactive webinar exploring the Universal Design for Learning Guideline, Welcoming Interests and Identities (7): Nurture Joy and Play (7.3). During this session, we’re going talk about and practice using both analog and AI tools to create moments of surprise and delight. Joy and play were integrated into the UDL guidelines as part of Multiple Means of Engagement. They offer a unique opportunity to attract and engage students in systems that are still routed in traditional delivery methods. Joy and play are typical characteristics in an elementary school curriculum, but rarely are they considered, nor discussed in higher ed. Together we’ll play some games, and explore some activities to bring more play and joy into teaching, learning and assessment. In turn, faculty and students alike will create an environment that fosters community, connection, and creativity. The best part, we will use existing tools that are readily available.
