By Top Hat Supply for Journeys

Overview

Come be inspired by the creativity of two musical artists finding improvisational resonance with a small, intimate audience!

"Do no fear mistakes--there are none." -- Miles Davis

Top Hat Supply for Journeys is excited to welcome two multidisciplinary instrumentalists, Matt Siffert and Megan Burtt, to inspire us to embrace the improvisational spirit within.

Check your phone at the door and take in the latest work by local artist, Carol Ann Wachter. After a short talk about the evening and their approach to their craft, Matt and Megan will take us on a journey through some of their newest work. They will also talk through their inspiration in between playing and open up to questions from our small audience.

Please arrive at 8:00pm. We will have tea and sparkling water available (BYOB also welcome). The brief talk will begin at 8:30 ; we will not be able to accommodate those arriving late as it disrupts the experience. People are invited to stay after the event to enjoy the evening. Seating is first come first serve.

About the artists:

Matt Siffert is a multidisciplinary musician from New York City and new member of the Boulder community. His creative practice spans music creation, education and administration. Over a 15-year career in music, Matt has worked with artists across genres and generations, including Emmauel Ax, Jon Batiste, Aaron Diehl, Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Chris Potter, Kate Soper, Michael Tilson Thomas and Adia Victoria.

Siffert's music explores the intersections between folk-influenced songwriting and contemporary musical adventurousness. He has released seven albums as a singer-songwriter, performed nationally and internationally, and been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, NPR, and The Deli, where he was given Nashville's Emerging Artist award.

Megan Burtt is an internationally recognized singer-songwriter from Colorado known for her emotionally honest lyrics and blend of pop, folk, and Americana music. A Berklee College of Music graduate, her journey includes overcoming a serious illness and exploring different musical projects, including the all-redhead Americana band Gingerbomb.

A few years back, Megan hit on something that fundamentally changed her approach to songwriting. It wasn’t so much a new method as giving herself permission to get even closer to the truth. In short, she allowed herself to stop dancing around what she really wanted to say.

“I discovered a side of myself that I liked in terms of songwriting,” says the Colorado-based performer, who’s been named a winner at the Kerrville NewFolk Competition and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival. “Like, ‘Whoa, this is different.’ It’s become a sensibility that I know how to rest in. It’s almost like an instrument in and of itself, like I’m learning how to play my honesty.”

Top Hat Supply for Journeys is an experimental art studio and nonprofit seeking to reconnect people with the creative spirit. Through events like these we hope to learn more about how to strengthen this connection in ourselves and in our community.
