Spirits in the Sea: Black Histories, Memory, and Underwater Exploration of the Henrietta Marie
Event Description: Join us for an evening of conversation, reflection, and exploration of Black history beneath the waves. This special event brings together leading scholars, divers, and cultural heritage professionals to discuss the intersections of maritime archaeology, African Diaspora memory, and underwater cultural heritage.
The evening features a panel conversation centering Black experiences in the underwater world — from recovery and remembrance of the Middle Passage and the Era of Transatlantic African Enslavement to radical practices in remembrance and future possibility. A closing reception provides an opportunity for connection, conversation, and continued engagement with the exhibit.
