Spices & Stories

This unique two-hour workshop on second Saturdays, 1-3 PM, is a collaboration between culinary storyteller Chef Ranjan Dey and interdisciplinary artist-educator Dr. Nandita Dinesh. Using spices and creative writing as the mediums for engagement this workshop invites audiences in the Bay Area to practically explore how culinary and literary ingredients from the Indian subcontinent can catalyze new forms of storytelling.

Structure: we will begin with conversation starters for you to get to know others in the room. Then, you will be offered creative writing and storytelling prompts that invite engagement with spices and texts. There will be opportunities for you to share your stories, and we will end with delicious snacks!

Language: while the workshop will be conducted in English, you will be welcome to write in the language of your choice. When sharing extracts, you will be requested to translate what you’re sharing into English.

Tools: you will be invited to write by hand, using physical materials provided to you at the workshop. If you prefer writing on laptops, phones, or other devices, you are welcome to bring those along.
