Are you one of the more than 857,000 foreign-born immigrant teachers working in the US? Do you ever wonder if your students understand your instruction? Have you ever felt that students notice your accent much more than what you're trying to teach them?
In this 5-week online workshop, you will learn powerful strategies for speaking more effectively in both remote and face-to-face settings. Expert teacher educator and pronunciation coach Dr. Lara Wallace will introduce you to practical, effective techniques that will help you be better understood. Group discussion and individual practice are featured in each live session.

Topics include:
- Week 1: "Why don't my students pay attention?" Learn how to engage students with your voice, lecture organization, and effective use of questions.
- Week 2: "Why are North American student so rude to their teachers?" Learn how students think about their own learning, what they really want, and how to leverage your strengths to create a positive classroom culture.
- Week 3: "What can I do when things fall apart?" Learn how to prevent and repair communication breakdown by using effective English pronunciation strategies, including stress and vowel quality.
- Week 4: "Help! Office hours are so stressful!" Learn how to shape your one-on-one time with students
- Week 5: "How can I keep improving?" Learn how to build effective speaking into your lesson planning, preparation, and ongoing practice.
As we explore these topics, you will practice applying them to your own teaching context through relevant, targeted speaking assignments and receive feedback from experienced Color Vowel®-trained pronunciation coaches.
Dr. Lara Wallace, a Color Vowel® Trained Teacher, has worked with international teachers since 2006, helping them pass high-stakes speaking assessments and equipping them with strategies for being better understood by their students. She coordinates the Pronunciation and Speaking Labs that support international teachers and has given professional development workshops for International Teaching Assistants.
