Sounds from Afar
Overview
On Sunday, December 14, we begin our winter season of Sounds from Afar with a celebration of Chef Sumer’s Christmas in Palestine Buffet, honoring flavors and traditions rooted in centuries of memory.
We welcome Sumer, the founder of Mid East Eats, who brings the warmth of Palestinian home cooking to the table. Her menu features vegan maqlubeh—a beautifully layered rice and vegetable dish turned out in its signature pattern—alongside slow-cooked leg of lamb fragrant with traditional spices, musakhan with sumac-spiced chicken and caramelized onions, and a bright salata tahiniyya with tahini, lemon, and garlic. Dessert will be hilbeh, a fenugreek semolina cake soaked in spiced syrup, served with a refreshing watermelon mint mimosa.
Music for the afternoon will be presented by Danna Yunis, a Palestinian DJ known for weaving together sounds and rhythms from Middle Eastern, South Asian, Afrobeat, and Latin traditions into richly layered sonic sets. A poet, professor, and writer at heart, Danna is a true lover of language and the many ways it carries meaning and emotion. She brings that same sensitivity and intention to her musical selections, curating sounds that move people both physically and emotionally.
