Sounds from Afar
Overview
Sounds from Afar: Brunch
A Music-Led Gathering Hosted by the Tiyya Foundation & El Merchante
Sounds from Afar was created as a space to listen to music, to memory, and to one another.
This brunch series is shaped around sound as a storytelling practice. Curated music from across the Global South guides the rhythm of the morning, offering a sensory entry point into histories of migration, resilience, and belonging. Often played on vinyl, the music invites presence and reflection, creating a shared atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection.
Hosted at Flavors from Afar restaurant, the experience unfolds slowly and intentionally. Food is served as accompaniment while music leads, holding space for listening and collective experience.
Sounds from Afar is also a fundraiser supporting Tiyya’s work with displaced families through economic opportunity, family services, and community-building programs across Los Angeles and Orange County. By joining us, you are supporting spaces that honor cultural memory and make room for people to feel rooted, seen, and welcomed.
