Check out our Soundpainting Drop-in Classes! This series offers hands-on instruction in basic Soundpainting within a fun, safe, and challenging classroom environment. Co-taught by Certified Instructors Leese Walker and Nolan Kennedy with over 30 years of combined Soundpainting expertise and instruction.

Soundpainting is a language comprised of physical gestures communicated to performers. The gestures are used to sculpt spontaneous compositions in front of an audience. Soundpainting is not only a language but a powerful tool every performer should have in their toolbox, allowing them to reach new limits of their instrument.


Soundpainting classes are a collaboration between Letter of Marque Theater Company and Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble.


Strike Anywhere’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

What is Soundpainting?

Soundpainting is a universal sign language for live composition. The technique allows a composer to communicate with an interdisciplinary group of improvisers and compose in real-time. Performers respond to the soundpainter's gestures sculpting their improvisations as signed.

Is Soundpainting 100% Improvised?

Specific pieces of set music or choreography can be called up by the Soundpainter and manipulated. The soundpainter can then disrupt, remix, or riff on the material. No two shows are ever the same.
