Somatic Movement Laboratory

By Laura Housgard

Overview

An embodied movement practice rooted in 5rhythms, with a touch of ecstatic dance, trauma release exercises (TRE), and a whole lot of you.

Dance?
Non-dance?
Movement?
Stillness?

A somatic, physical meditation that peels back the layers of self to reveal your true essence. If you give in to the dance fully - expressing, releasing, allowing it to be a vehicle of metamorphosis - you will not be the same person on the other side.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Cost: free

Bring: water and an open mind

Wear: clothes to move and sweat in

When you arrive you can leave bags, shoes, jackets by the door. Being barefoot is highly encouraged.

Please no talking once you enter Madre. I’ll have music playing. We’ll take a few minutes to ground into this moment, this space we’re in, to warm up our bodies, and prepare physically and mentally. This time is for you to start getting into your body. Feel free to stretch, dance, roll around on the ground, do some yoga, look around the space, ground and adjust to your new settings.

After about 15 minutes I will offer an explanation and demonstration of the 5rhythms ‘wave’ format of movement we will be following.

  • Flow
  • Staccato
  • Chaos/TRE
  • Lyrical
  • Stillness

The difference between this and classic 5rhythms is freedom. The structure is nice, but if it’s not working for you, honor that.

You can sit on the floor, you can leave the room. That’s all a part of the dance - and it’s WELCOMED. You don’t have to force it. If it doesn’t feel good for you, you can stop.

Move in a way that makes you feel proud of yourself. It’s up to you to get what you want out of it, so even though this practice can be scary or intense, I recommend not holding back.

We will move for about 50 minutes, then we’ll close out with a brief circle.

GROUND RULES

  • No talking (however sighs, tears, expressions of release l, joy etc are welcome).
  • No touching.
  • No judgement (of self or other). This is a safe space for ALL.
  • For the first event, no kids or animals allowed. In the future I’d love to have kids join!

DISCLAIMER

I’m not a certified 5rhythms instructor. This offering will be based on my experience dancing 5rhythms over the years, combined with other somatic practices I've found helpful on my own healing journey.
