Description
Loss is something every one of us experiences — yet we rarely talk about it, let alone learn how to tend to it together.
Grief Garage for Chinatown is a hands-on, community learning space that invites neighbours, business owners, and community members to explore how we can respond to loss — of people, places, roles, and routines — with care and connection rather than isolation.
This workshop is an act of community care for Edmonton’s Chinatown — a neighbourhood that has experienced many layers of loss, from long-standing businesses and community members to shifts in safety, belonging, and identity. Together, we’ll make space for what’s been carried quietly, and begin rebuilding the collective capacity to acknowledge and heal.
The session will be led by Soloss, a network dedicated to making space for the universal human experience of grief. Over the past three years, Soloss has supported neighbours, peers, and front-line workers — in encampments, end-of-life care, and community spaces — to create conditions for authentic engagement with grief. Their Grief Garage approach shares the values, ideas, and practices that help us stay connected while grieving and rebuild a culture that can hold loss together.
At Grief Garage for Chinatown, we’ll work through two of the core learning modules:
Module 1: Anyone Can Tend to Loss
- Grief care isn’t just for professionals. This session breaks the myth that you need expertise to support others — you just need tools and presence. Learn how to recognize loss, offer meaningful acknowledgment, and show up for others (and yourself) in small, powerful ways.
Module 2: Moving Emotions
- Grief lives in the body. This session introduces simple, embodied practices for processing emotions beyond talk therapy — helping us release tension, build resilience, and make space for healing.
Together, we’ll explore non-verbal ways of showing care, practice managing discomfort, and imagine what a culture of collective grieving and healing might look like right here in Chinatown.
Who Should Attend
- Local business owners, employees, and residents
- Community leaders, volunteers, and service providers
- Anyone curious about how to tend to grief — in themselves and in others
