Soil Health for Climate Action
Overview
Event Description
This high-level dialogue will explore the pivotal role of agricultural soils as a strategic entry point for achieving climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience goals under the Paris Agreement. Soils—particularly in agroecosystems—are not only a major carbon sink but also a key component of sustainable food systems, water regulation, and biodiversity.
As countries refine and implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), integrating soil health and sustainable land management offers scalable, nature-based solutions with high co-benefits for climate, livelihoods, and ecosystems.
This session will also address the potential of Article 6.8 of the Paris Agreement, which recognizes the value of non-market approaches. Through this lens, soil-based strategies can be mainstreamed into cooperative frameworks, policy incentives, and support mechanisms that do not rely on carbon markets but instead emphasize equity, food security, and long-term resilience.
