A 5-mile snowshoe hike with 1,400' of elevation up & down at Overlook Mountain in the Catskills.
Bring your own snowshoes and microspikes, or add rentals for the day - $15 for snowshoes and/or $5 for microspikes. We will have varied sizes to choose from at the beginning of the hike.
Our moderate-level snowshoeing day-trip adds a little more elevation so we can visit Overlook Mountain. The planned roundtrip route of 5 miles and 1,400' of elevation up and down will be a step up in adventure to see the Overlook Mountain House Ruins and the Overlook Fire Tower at the peak.
This snowshoeing day trip is perfect for beginners taking it to the next level or those with snowshoeing experience looking to explore the trails up high in winter at a relaxing pace. The Catskill Mountains rarely disappoint so we count on the trails being covered in a blanket of snow for an unforgettable experience. As we explore down low in the foothills on less challenging terrain you’ll see the frozen rivers, snow-covered trees, and gorgeous valleys in the distance. We’ll make our way up some gentle trails that lead us to stunning views of the winter landscape, eerie ruins, and an unobstructed view from the fire tower. Along the way, we’ll delve into essential topics including moisture management, different winter traction devices, and special considerations for a safe and successful winter hiking experience when we take on more challenging elevations. Join us at an amazing time of year to hike in one of our favorite parks!
Many TBPers with longer drives go up the night before to stay at one of the many local hotels or campgrounds.
Although we're hoping for lots of snow to make it a snowshoeing wonderland, the weather is completely unpredictable. If we end up with less-than-ideal snowy conditions, we'll still have a great time with microspikes and go over winter hiking best practices and skills, such as how to dress, the different gear we carry, and other seasonal trip planning considerations to make winter hiking just as comfortable and enjoyable as the rest of the year.
Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
