A 7-mile snowshoe hike with 2,000' of elevation up & down at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills.
Bring your own snowshoes and microspikes, or add rentals for the day - $15 for snowshoes and/or $5 for microspikes. We will have varied sizes to choose from at the beginning of the hike.
There’s nothing like a panoramic snow-covered view from up high, looking down on a winter wonderland, to give you a whole new appreciation for the wonders of Mother Nature and how lucky we are for the experience. On this trip, we’ll travel farther up the treeline to the highest fire tower in New York state and the second-highest peak in the Catskills, Hunter Mountain, on a true winter adventure.
Catskill winter views are simply stunning, and pairing that with a more challenging trail to reach the top is one of the most rewarding experiences. On the way, we’ll discuss winter gear, hydration and drinking water procurement, shelter options for planned and unplanned winter nights out, clothing options, moisture management, and other winter topics, We’ll start easy, enjoying the beauty down low until the trail begins to climb 2,000’ over 3.5 miles topping out at the peak with unmatched panoramic views of the Catskills. Bring a thermos of soup or hot chocolate to enjoy and take pictures before descending the 3.5 miles back down to the bottom. Plan to make memories on this one!
Prerequisite: No experience necessary, just a fitness level for 7 miles and 2,000' of elevation. We will teach all beginners.
Many TBPers with longer drives go up the night before to stay at one of the many local hotels or campgrounds.
Although we're hoping for lots of snow to make it a snowshoeing wonderland, the weather is completely unpredictable. If we end up with less-than-ideal snowy conditions, we'll still have a great time with microspikes and go over winter hiking best practices and skills, such as how to dress, the different gear we carry, and other seasonal trip planning considerations to make winter hiking just as comfortable and enjoyable as the rest of the year.
Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
