SMCH Resource Nurse (RSN) Class
- IMPORTANT: Unit leadership approval is required to participate.
- Minimum of 4 students to confirm a class. If this is not met, the class will be cancelled and the students will be offered the option to transfer to another class.
DESCRIPTION
The Stanford Medicine Children’s Health (SMCH) Resource Nurse (RSN) class is specifically designed for RSNs to meet the knowledge requirements for the Resource Nurse role competency. It includes a review of the RSN role as a frontline leader, effective delivery of peer feedback, workplace violence and de-escalation strategies, etc.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the class, the participant will be able to:
- Differentiate between leadership and management principles and their application as an SMCH RSN
- Articulate the standard work and core professional responsibilities of the RSN
- Analyze the characteristics of effective leadership and its impact on team performance and patient outcomes.
- Apply problem-solving skills to effectively manage and de-escalate workplace conflict situations
- Recognize the appropriate escalation pathway for conflict resolution.
- Identify regulation strategies during time of stress and practice usings a model for delivering feedback
- Recognize the direct and indirect costs associated with the daily operational decisions regarding staffing and acuity levels.
- Utilize staffing tools and patient acuity data to make fiscally sound decisions regarding optimal staffing levels.
- Explain the RSN's vital role in maintaining overall fiscal responsibility within the clinical environment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
This continuing education (CE) course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider Number 9713.
Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry is accredited as provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). Provider Number P0668.

Earning CE Credits
- To be eligible for Continuing Education (CE) credits, participants are required to attend the entire course or event and complete the course evaluation. Partial credit cannot be granted for late arrivals or early departures.
Certificate Issuance and Record Keeping
- CE certificates will be distributed within 30 days of course completion. Participants are responsible for maintaining their personal records of accrued CE documentation. Certificates must be retained for four years following the course date and are valid for a single use toward registered nurse license renewal.

REGISTRATION and FEES
- This FREE training is exclusively offered to Stanford Medicine Children's Health employees.
- Stanford Children's Employees (with no CE credits) = FREE
- Stanford Children's Employees (with CE credits) = $45 (plus admin fees)
- The Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPE&I) accepts card payments ONLY for course fees and materials. Transfer of Funds are no longer accepted. Employees seeking reimbursement for educational expenses must obtain their manager's approval through Bright Horizon. CHANGES ON REGISTRATION

- Join Waitlist: Please note that being on the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment to the course but it certainly increases your chances when an opening becomes available. Our waitlist is maintained on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon seat availability, you will be contacted automatically with further instructions on how to register.
CANCELLATION and REFUND
- FULL REFUND for cancellations at least 2 weeks prior to class date.
- PARTIAL REFUND for cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to class date.
- NO REFUND for cancellations less than 5 days prior to class date.
- For SCH Employees: NO SHOWS or cancellations on the day of class are considered unexcused absences. Managers will be notified. A medical note may be required in the event of illness or medical emergencies.
- Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur. If CPEI cancels class, full refund will be given.
