With over half of its population qualifying as rent-burdened and vacancy rates at historic lows, New York is in an acute stage of its prolonged housing emergency. This recent documentary examines the affordability crisis from multiple angles: tenant organizing in Sunset Park, community fights against luxury towers in Chinatown, Moumita Ahmed's 2021 City Council race in Queens. The film also shines a light on deed theft—a pervasive practice targeting low-income homeowners in gentrifying Brooklyn, using forged deeds, con-artist tactics, and other grifts to coerce property owners to sign over their homes. Join us for a screening of the film, followed by a conversation with Lienhard & Grumbach PLLC, a boutique firm in Brooklyn dedicated to justice for victims of deed theft and real estate fraud, and Janina Davis, a victim of deed fraud who has been fighting for justice since the 2000s. In collaboration with the Housing Justice clinic.
