Join contemporary artist René Shoemaker to explore the fine art of silk painting. La Caféothèque-Reid Hall is offering a one-day workshop for you to discover the joy of creating art on silk with beautiful colors and design. You will learn new skills, let your imagination soar, and be surrounded by fine art and like-minded people in the beautiful setting of Reid Hall.
During this guided workshop exploring painting on silk, you will create your own artwork to enjoy forever. The creative experience will begin investigating color by creating your own colors using a supplied chart to refer to. We’ll dive into designing your project, respecting your design aesthetic along with the qualities of the silk and the dye. Sketching and transferring the design onto the silk comes next, while you become comfortable with the resist and the various ways of applying the dye. Silk painting is a fascinating art that makes the silk come alive with color as you apply dye to the silk, and the outcome is a bit magical.
Each workshop participant will create a painting on a 11-inch silk square that can be worn as a scarf or displayed as a wall hanging. All supplies will be provided - all you need to bring is inspiration and a readiness to learn a new skill and to create beauty!
Interested, but not sure what to paint? René will share silk painting examples during the workshop to help trigger your creativity, and will be happy to guide you through the discovery process.
No experience necessary; yet all levels welcome.
