About this event
Short Story Club is like a book club, but for short stories!
RSVP to receive a link to great stories you can read in a single sitting and join a live discussion with the author on Zoom.
For this, we'll discuss two stories from Exhalation by Ted Chiang.
Story summary:
"What's Expected of Us" — A device predicts when you'll push its button, leading many to question the idea of free will.
"The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling" — A journalist observes how "Remem", a form of lifelogging that effectively grants its users perfect memory, effects his relationship with his daughter. In parallel, a man is one of the first of his people to learn to read and write and must navigate the conflicts this creates with his culture's oral tradition.
About the author:
Ted Chiang is a Hugo and Nebula award-winning science fiction author most known for his soulful short stories. His story "Story of Your Life", about a linguist deciphering an alien language and uncovering the nature of time, was adapted into the feature film ARRIVAL. EXHALATION is his most recent anthology, containing nine stories that explore ideas ranging from free will, memory, and time travel.
A note on ticket prices: We're offering two types of tickets. The $10 ticket will provide a $10 donation to COVID-19 relief causes. The FREE ticket is just that, free! Both tickets get you a link to the stories and an invite to attend the live Q&A. We're happy to have you either way.
