Finances can be a difficult topic to talk about with clients who experience disordered gambling. Often clinicians and counselors have received very little if any training around finances and money issues. To work effectively with Problem Gamblers and their families, the ability to talk about money is a key component to positive outcomes in treatment. This workshop will give you a deeper understanding of the role money plays in Disorder Gambling and some basic tools to use with your clients.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three financial tools to use in your work with problem gamblers and their families;

  • Explain two debt reduction strategies to use in a clinical setting;

  • Describe Two ways financial issues may hinder the recovery process.

Shirley Hoak, JD, ICGC-II is an Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor II. She has worked for The Bettor Choice Program/The Connection, Inc., Middletown, CT. for the past 8 years. Bettor Choice is a gambling specific treatment program for problem gamblers and their families. She now works with Rhode Island Problem Gambling Services as the Peer Services Co-Ordinator. She brings a unique perspective of lived experience, treatment and recovery to her work. She has presented at National, Regional and State Conferences and is a sought-after speaker and trainer. She maintains an individual caseload and facilitates early and long-term recovery groups.
