About this event

Shinto Muso Ryu is a 400 year old koryu (lit. “old school”) martial art focused on using a medium length staff to defeat an opponent armed with a sword. Training is through kata, which are pre-arranged sequences of stimuli-response pairs designed to build habitual responses to different scenarios.

Some of the common appeals to studying Shinto Muso Ryu include:

  • The goal of learning combat with feudal era weapons is a stimulating physical, mental and intellectual challenge.
  • Training in a 400 year old tradition is a novel means of learning and experiencing Japanese culture.
  • Weapons can be an appealing focus of study due to their being an equalizer over strength and size.

No prior martial arts experience is necessary. Training weapons will be provided.

Chicago Jodokai is a small SMR study group. We generally train Wednesday evenings at the Unity Lutheran Church.
