About this event
Enrolling your child in the Acessible Swim Class will help them gain life-saving water safety skills and learn to have fun in the water.
Classes will be every Saturday, starting on Saturday October 18th through Saturday December 6th, 2025.
This program is designed for participants with varying conditions being considered. Many individuals can benefit from adaptive aquatics lessons, which are an excellent choice for swimmers with specific conditions. This includes individuals who could make faster progress if they were taught in a way that puts them at ease with an adapted approach, considering how they learn bes Acessible Swim Class can be helpful for children with the following conditions but not limited to:
- Angelman’s Syndrome
- Chromosomal Abnormalities
- Motor incoordination
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Scoliosis
- Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
- Speech Delay
- Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
- Stroke
GETTING STARTED:
It's important to note that only one registration per participant is allowed for the Acessible Swim Class. Any duplicate registrations will be removed from the system. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so once the capacity is full, you will need to wait for the next available class.
Registration opens Monday, October 13th; Classes begin October 18th.
Please note that registration may begin 30 days from registration to allow time to schedule and complete the required assessments.
The instructor will advise starting date based on enrollment.
Reserve your spot via Eventbrite, bring the reservation ticket to Shenandoah Pool and other locations to be later determined.
Fill out the registration no later than August 15th.
Once you submit the registration, you will be scheduled to meet with the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for a virtual SNAP (Strengths, Needs, Abilities, and Preferences) assessment followed by an in-person swimming assessment with the Adaptive Aquatics instructor between October 13th - october 17th.
Parents will be notified as soon as possible.
If the participant meets the eligibility criteria, they will be added to the class list.
If the participant does not meet the eligibility criteria, they will be reassigned to a different class to ensure they receive the appropriate level of instruction. Registration for reassignment will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Classes will be every Saturday, starting on Saturday October 18th through Saturday December 6th , 2025.
There will be six sessions:
9:00AM - 9:30AM (ages 6 - 13)
9:45AM - 10:15AM (ages 14 & Up)
10:30AM - 11AM (ages 6 -13)
11:15AM - 11:45AM (ages 14 & Up)
12PM - 12:30PM (ages 6 -13)
12:45PM - 1:15PM (ages 6 -13)
Once the participant is registered an individualized plan is implemented in the program to ensure each participant reaches their goals. Throughout the lesson, parents will be able to discuss their child’s progress, given at-home activities if applicable, and additional resources to help ensure that water safety is a part of everyday conversation and activity. Based on their progress, the participant may be relocated to another program. To secure a spot, registration is required on a first come first served basis.
