Join your neighbors in South Carolina to provide food, shelter, comfort and care for your community when a hurricane or other major disaster strikes. With a few hours of training, you can gain preparedness skills that will keep your family safe and your community resilient. Your compassion and our humanitarian mission are essential to overcome increasing threats and destruction from natural disasters.
When disasters strike and people are displaced from their home, you can be the shelter in the storm. Start your training today and be ready to respond when the next major disaster strikes by volunteering in a Red Cross shelter close to home or across SC.
Shelter Service Associate volunteers support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information, or other areas.
If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local or regional shifts of 12 hours each. Volunteers must complete specific requirements, including training, to be eligible for disaster assignments and deployments.
