Description

A Creative Placemaking Conference January 23-24, 2018

Stepping Stones Museum, Norwalk

The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County is organizing a 2-day creative placemaking conference, Shaping Community, designed to demonstrate and discuss the role of the cultural community in shaping our neighborhoods and towns. It will also focus on workshopping Creative Placemaking project grant proposals for submission to the NEA Our Town grant program and other placemaking funders. This conference will build on the impetus and results of Creative Spaces for the Creative Economy, a one-day community conference organized by the Cultural Alliance in 2016, in response to calls for action to bring underused real estate into more productive use for the cultural community, as well as the recent Citizen Jane Film Festival, co-organized with Bridgeport Downtown Special Services District and CT Main Street Center, to demonstrate and discuss the role of citizens in urban revitalization.

Keynote speakers include: Patrick McMahon, President and CEO of Connecticut Main Street Center, Keith Stokes, Vice-President, 1696 Heritage Group; Jamie Bennett, Executive Director, ArtPlace America; Jen Hughes, Acting Director of Design and Creative Placemaking Programs, National Endowment for the Arts.

The focus of the conference will encompass the role of artists, creative businesses and cultural nonprofits in the economic and community development and well-being of the towns of coastal Fairfield County. Questions to be answered include: What are some of the roles that artists and cultural organizations play in a town's community life and economic development and what examples can we offer? What are some specific improvement and development projects in each of our towns on which artists, cultural nonprofits, other nonprofits, citizens, developers and town planners could work on collaboratively?

Day One (open to everyone) will demonstrate work that has been done to date. In addition to our speakers and performers, we will include five key panels:

  • Artist Spaces and their Impact on Community Life and Economic Development.
  • Artists, Public Art and Community Development: examples of public art and its impact
  • Artist-in-Residence programs: how can they impact the community?
  • Storytelling and our Towns: how to change the narratives of our towns and neighborhoods?
  • The Role of Theatre in Creating Thriving Places

Day Two (open only to members of working groups) will be a working day of creating and crafting placemaking projects. Delegations of 6-8 representatives from 9 towns will work with facilitators from ArtPlace America, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). In a mixture of plenaries, breakout groups, speakers, videos, and a Pitch Panel (for workshop participants to try out their proposals on funders), we will work together to produce some citizen-inspired placemaking proposals. Workshop teams will comprise members of local town government, cultural and social service nonprofits, local businesses and others working together to create possible solutions to neighborhood.
