La Plata County Extension offers the ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager training. This class comes with a study guide, 1-day training (in-person), lunch and a proctored exam.

Study guides are also available in Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. For study guides in a language other than English, please contact Nicole at nicole.clark@colostate.edu or 970-382-6461.

Purchases for "Proctored exam only" will allow you to take the exam without attending the class - recommended only for those with significant food service and safety experience. No study guide included with this option. For additional options, please call 970-382-6461.

Advance self-study is highly recommended! Please pick up your study from the La Plata County Extension Office, 2500 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301, or pay an additional $11.00 to have it mailed to you.


Day 1: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (class), 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (exam)

You have 2 hours to complete the exam; you may or may not need all of this time. However, please plan your schedule for the day assuming you will.

Proctored exam only: Arrive at La Plata County Extension building no later than 3:15 pm on the day of class.

Upon passing the exam (70% or greater), you will receive a certificate of training, good for 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

Am I required to take the class or may I take the test only?

You may opt to take the test only, however, this is not recommended for anyone without significant experience in food safety practices. You will also be responsible for educating yourself on any updates to the FDA Food Code. Purchase a ticket for "Proctored exam only" if you wish to go this route.

Are their price discounts for having mutiple people from one organization attend?

Yes. However, it will mean sharing a book between participants. If you sign up for the training far enough in advance so everyone has adequate time to study, this option may work for you.

What if I don't pass the ServSafe exam?

You will need a 70% or greater to pass the exam. If you do not achieve this on the first try, you may take the test up to three more times over a year. The cost per test ranges from $45.00 - $65.00 depending on if you retake during a preexisting class, or if you choose a privately scheduled exam.

What are the regulations for having a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM)on duty?

Beginning in March 2025, the Colorado Department of Health and Environment will require a CFPM to be on duty during all hours in which the establishment is handling food. Previous regulations only required that there was a CFPM, not necessarily on duty at all times during operation.

Is this course offered in Spanish?
