Tribeca Films presents SERIOUS PEOPLE (2025)(NR) on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at 7:30 pm with a post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers.

SERIOUS PEOPLE follows expectant father and successful music video director Pasqual (Gutierrez) who hires a look-alike to work in his place when he gets the opportunity for the job of a lifetime.

The film, partially based on true events, also stars Gutierrez’s real-life partner Christine Yuan, his directing partner RJ Sanchez and Miguel Huerta.

The film is produced by Ryan Hahn for HPLA, Laurel Thomson for Long Holiday and Teddy Lee. Executive producers include Jerad Anderson and Natasha Atalla Seubert for Florence and Christine D’Souza Gelb and Julia Nelson for 2AM, who brokered the sale of the film.

Shot and set mostly in East Los Angeles, the film is meant to be Gutierrez’s love letter to this part of Southern California. “Los Angeles is our home, and it was crazy watching this film right now in light of all the fires,” he says. “A lot of people here on this stage have been impacted by that in a very serious way. It’s a beautiful city. Specifically East L.A., which we talk about a lot. That is where my family originates from, and it’s not a side of L.A. you see photographed that often, but to me, that is very much what L.A. is; it’s not just the glitz and glamour. Yes, there is the clout chasing, but we wanted to make L.A. a character.”

With its wit and unexpected twists, Serious People cleverly pokes fun at the relentless hustle of the entertainment industry. One of the surprising and hilarious revelations in the film is that Miguel isn’t the only doppelgänger we meet. “It’s kind of this commentary about the replaceability of people in Los Angeles,” says Gutierrez, eliciting “oohs” and then laughs from the crowd. The film also highlights the delicate balance of adulthood, including venturing into parenthood. Whether navigating the pressures of creative success or showing up for a growing family, Gutierrez and Mullinkosson’s original and hilarious take on the work-life struggle will resonate with anyone who’s ever tried to have it all.

WHAT TIME CAN I ARRIVE?

Attendees will be allowed to enter the auditorium up to 60 minutes prior to show time.

WHERE DO I PARK?

Free parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the Gardena Cinema on the north side.

HOW DO I REDEEM MY TICKET?

Upon purchase, ticket will be emailed to you as a PDF attachment from Eventbrite. When you arrive to the event, please show the entrance attendant the bar code on your ticket at the entrance to the cinema, either by holding up your printed version, or by displaying it on your phone or smart device. Attendant will scan it to check you in, and you'll be good to go into the auditorium!

CAN I BRING FOOD / SNACKS?

NO! This is an indoor screening. Please do not bring outside food or drinks inside the cinema. Tasty refreshments and fresh popped popcorn will be sold at the cinema snack bar.

WILL YOU HAVE RESTROOMS?

YES! Gardena Cinema's lobby, snack bar, and restrooms will be open.
