You must be a resident of the City of Longmont to attend this class. The class is free. There are 18 participant sign-ups. At that time, the event will start a waitlist. If someone drops out, the first person on the wait list will be notified.

Class Registration Summary:

In this class, Instructors will start by discussing the importance of taking steps to ensure students’ personal safety. Situational awareness, home safety, and car safety will be discussed to increase awareness about actions students can take in their everyday lives to reduce their chances of victimization.

Psychological, physical, and environmental factors that can affect one’s ability to defend oneself will be discussed. Students will be introduced to the concept of having a “warrior mindset” and taught how to mentally and physically prepare themselves for situations in which they may need to defend themselves. Different levels of confrontation and the legal ramifications of self-defense and physical force will be discussed.

Students will then participate in a group physical warm-up session and introduce themselves to the group. Instructors will then conduct comprehensive demonstrations of various physical techniques that can be employed in self-defense situations, ranging from verbal techniques to strikes and escapes. Students will then be given the opportunity to practice these techniques.

Learning Goals:

Educate students on mental and physical preparedness as it relates to self-defense
Educate students on personal safety tips they can utilize in everyday life
Inform students of the legal ramifications of using physical self-defense techniques
Allow for physical practice to increase students’ confidence in self-defense techniques and themselves

Performance Outcome(s):

Students will gain knowledge about ways to improve their personal safety on a regular basis and how to avoid situations that may put them in danger, prior to needing to use physical techniques. Students will also gain knowledge and confidence in knowing when to use physical techniques and demonstrate proficiency in administering those self-defense techniques.

Safety Plan:

A safety plan has been established by instructors to ensure the fast evaluation and treatment of both minor and major injury situations. If an emergency medical situation arises, instructors will determine if the injury can be transported to a medical facility (LPH) by non-emergent means such as a police vehicle. If the injury is serious, we will contact dispatch by either radio or 911 to activate the emergency response system.

Required Attire:

*Participants are encouraged to wear athletic pants, a comfortable shirt (no thin straps), and athletic, closed-toe shoes for ease of movement and safety. No open-toe shoes will be permitted to prevent injury.

*Participants should not wear any hard/sharp/delicate jewelry, piercings, watches, or other items that could injure them or other participants. Piercings that cannot be removed may require wrapping or taping. Silicone rings are permitted.

*Due to the physical nature of this class, we recommend that long hair be placed in a ponytail, braid, or bun to avoid injury.

Personal Grooming Standards:

1. In order to avoid issues with bacteria, MRSA, ringworm, etc. we have high standards for the personal hygiene of our participants. With that in mind, we require participants to;

a. Shower Prior to and After the Class- Showering before training removes dirt and sweat, while showering immediately after training helps remove sweat and bacteria accumulated during the session, reducing the risk of skin infections.

b. Trim Nails- Fingernails should be trimmed short to prevent accidental scratches and cuts on your training partners. Long or sharp nails can cause nasty cuts and even injuries to the eyes. Fake or long nails may reduce your ability to participate in certain techniques included in this class or cause injury to you.

c. Wear Clean Clothing- Dirty clothing can harbor bacteria and lead to skin infections.

d. Avoid Strong Scents- Refrain from wearing strong perfumes, colognes, or body

sprays, as these can be unpleasant for others during close contact. Use a good deodorant.

e. Stay Home if You are Sick- Do not train if you are sick with a contagious illness. This protects your health and prevents the spread of illness to your training partners.
