About this event

Hobbies • Photography

In this class, I will address how to go about the principles of visual story telling in any given situation. Photography is about finding the moment that tells the story. Outside of the captured frame, there is always a whole lot going on (much of which is distracting and not necessarily relevant to the story being told). In my career in both photojournalism and on set photography, I have constantly been photographing in environments which are chaotic and change moment to moment. That’s what I refer to as “The Noise”. Through photos and stories I teach people how to see through all of that and find the gist of what is really going on.

Hopper Stone started as a photojournalist in 1988 while living in Europe. In 1997 he transitioned to working as an on set photographer for movies and television. His credits include “Modern Family”, “Hidden Figures”, "Captain Philips” “Blue Beetle” ,“The Sympathizer” and “Saturday Night". Most recently, Hopper just finished working on “Cape Fear” for Apple TV. His time in the movie industry has afforded him the opportunity to work with such actors as Robert Downey Jr, Tom Hanks, Melissa McCarthy and Samuel L. Jackson, among others.Through stories and pictures, Hopper will take you through what goes through the mind of a photographer who is surrounded by chaos and whose job it is to distill everything down to a single frame which tells a story. The idea is to help people apply those same principles to their own photography, regardless of genre. Hopper is a member of The International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) and President of The Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP). In 2012, he received the Publicists Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement in Television Still Photography.

Due to copyright issues and studio policies, photography and videography during Hopper’s lecture is strictly forbidden (but Hopper will gladly hang around after he’s done to schmooze and take pictures with people).
