Overview

The INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Framework and Assessment Guide

Steve Untz has spent a good portion of his professional career enhancing the Systems Engineering capabilities within various organizations. If you have struggled with what to do to improve your personal Systems Engineering practices, or those of your organization, this may be an invaluable presentation for you.

The INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Framework is a set of competencies for Systems Engineering. It provides guidance for both beneficiaries and practitioners to identify knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors important to Systems Engineering effectiveness in the application domain (e.g. space, transportation, medical) for which the competency model is applied. The associated Systems Engineering Competency Assessment Guide provides guidance and structure for assessing the level of competence of individuals or organizations.

This presentation will cover the Framework and Assessment Guide makeup and usage, along with examples of usage for individuals and organizations, which assists the identification and improvement of required knowledge, skills and behaviors appropriate to an area or role.

Steve Untz, recently retired, is a former Engineering Director at BAE Systems, where he actively used the INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Framework to assess and enhance the capabilities and competencies of the Engineering workforce. He is a long standing member of INCOSE, and participated in the creation of the Framework through his work in the Competency Working Group.

Steve has over 43 years of systems engineering, program management, and personnel management experience with the U.S. Navy, General Electric, Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin, United Defense, and BAE Systems.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University, and a Masters of Systems Engineering degree from St. Thomas University.
