About this event

Science & Tech • Other

Go behind the scenes of Northern Saw-whet Owl research with Indiana Audubon, in partnership with the Indiana Dunes State Park. For over 17 years, Project Owlnet in the Dunes has provided the opportunity for visitors to volunteer with our experienced banding staff on select nights. This exclusive experience allows you to assist with the research and banding process, gaining a deeper understanding of our work beyond the regular banding demonstrations.

What to Expect

During the All Access Field Night experience, participants will assist with net set up and take down, observe hourly owl removal, and witness banding at our outdoor field station. Banding staff will conduct a minimum of three checks each night. Note that participants must provide their own transportation for the 10-mile round trip each hour.

For a comfortable experience, bring a lawn chair, snacks, warm layers, and a headlamp or flashlight. Restrooms and a campfire with s'mores are available.

Registration

Please read and agree to the IAS Field Trip Release to participate in IAS-led events or trips. All Access Field Night fees support Indiana Audubon's ongoining Project Owlnet research.

Registration rates are $50 for adults and $35 for youth (ages 8-17). This experience is not recommended for children under 8 years old. If you're interested in our regular public banding demo nights, click here.

Due to the sensitive nature of the owls and the banding process, ticketing capacity is limited. Advance registration is required to secure your spot in this memorable experience.

If you use Apple's "Hide My Email" feature, forwarding may stop after 30 days, which can block event correspondence. Use a regular email to make sure you receive all event info. We do not add you to our mailing list unless you opt in during registration.

Location

All banding in 2025 will take place at Duneside Shelter in the Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N 25 E, Chesterton, Indiana. After entering the state park, follow signs past the Wilson Shelter. All times are Central Time.

Cancellations

The weather conditions may impact our nightly programs. If your registered night is canceled due to rain or high winds, we'll gladly help you reschedule for another night this season that suits you, pending availability.

Ticket cancellations initiated by the participant are non-refundable. All sales are final, and no refunds will be issued if you cancel your registration.
