About this event

SAVING HORSESHOE CRABS WITH EDUCATOR AND CONSERVATIONIST DAVE GRANT

There is no animal more maligned and at the same time more worthy of attention than the horseshoe crab.

Join us on June18th to celebrate Horseshoe Crabs and study this amazing resident of Sandy Hook, its important ecological role in our waters, and its remarkable medical value to humans. After an introductory presentation, we will take a bayside walk to search for these extraordinary creatures.

The walk will depart from the 1894 Spermaceti Cove USLSS Station, located on the ocean side between Lots D & E. Participants should dress for the weather and wear shoes to walk on the beach.

Our program leader Dave has presented teacher-training materials in every coastal state and overseas. He is currently the Conservation Director at the Shark Research Institute in Princeton, NJ, and is the former Director of the Brookdale College Ocean Institute at Sandy Hook. When not teaching or researching, Dave spends his summer breaks working as crew, lecturer, and scientist-in-residence on NOAA expedition vessels and on winter breaks on expedition cruises in Antarctica.
