Saturday DNA! Create-a-Karyotype: Cracking the Chromosome Code!
Overview
Chromosomes are bundles of DNA that form during cell division. Join us to “unravel” the interesting structure of the chromosome and discover how they store the genes that make us unique. Build a set of chromosomes to create a karyotype and learn how this technique is used to observe chromosomal patterns, identify abnormalities, and diagnose some genetic conditions. Then view actual karyotypes and try to find the small changes that can have a big effect!
Participants will:
- assemble a personalized karyotype using modeled chromosomes;
- link specific genes to chromosome pairs; and
- analyze real karyotypes to identify abnormalities.
Ages 10-13, one adult chaperone required. Chaperones must purchase a ticket and fully participate in all program activities.
