Sailing Strategies: Weather, Rules and Spinnakers

By The PYC Satori Foundation

Overview

A panel discussion presented by Satori's Adult Sailing Committee with guest speakers, see details below!

This panel discussion will include two segments.

The first will be weather- how to anticipate weather and use the latest weather information. Caroline Carithers, WKRG meteorologist, will discuss weather patterns in Pensacola Bay, understanding, identifying, and taking advantage of thermal (sea and land) breezes, and how to access weather forecasts using the various weather apps and models.

Tim Dunton will lead the second segment starting off with a brief explanation of the current sail race handicap rule – ORR-EZ. Tim and Toby Sirek will then lead a discussion about asymmetric spinnakers – when to use one, how to set and douse the sail, how to trim in different wind strengths and angles. Both Tim and Toby have worldwide experience using these sails and are well-known local sailors.
