Resilience is a group project.

Technology is a pillar communities rely on to navigate emergencies and disasters.

And right now, the digital infrastructure for safety is disappearing in real time.

WatchDuty.org is credited with keeping millions safe during wildfires, floods and climate disasters. The COVID Tracking Project at The Atlantic collected and published the most comprehensive datasets to help people safely navigate the pandemic.

🎙️ John Clarke Mills
CEO & Co-Founder, Watch Duty

John Clarke Mills is the CEO and co-founder of Watch Duty, a nonprofit wildfire tracking app providing real-time information on fire perimeters, evacuation zones, and air quality. Inspired by his own experience facing wildfires near his home in Northern California, Mills launched Watch Duty in 2021 to help communities stay informed and safe in the face of growing wildfire threats.

With a background in technology and entrepreneurship—having previously co-founded an operations platform for chain restaurants—Mills leveraged his expertise to build a platform powered by volunteers who gather data from fire scanners and reporters. Unlike traditional for-profit apps, Watch Duty remains donation-supported, reflecting Mills' commitment to public service over commercialization.

Recognized for her contributions to public data, digital governance, and ethical technology, including her leadership in The COVID Tracking Project, which informed policymakers, researchers, and the public during a critical global crisis.
