Led by Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman (2022 RU alum) this workshop delves into the interconnected stories of individuals to community, and their contexts within our worlds. In the first activity, the artist will guide participants through mapping individual narratives (generational, event/experiential, geographical, spiritual and emotional). This is done by creating mind webs. During the second half, participants will map their narratives on a larger sheet together, to create and record direct connections between each other. This project aims to foster a safe space learning of our invisible bonds, the importance of community, understanding one’s role in history/society, and above all to be curious!

About

Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman is an interdisciplinary artist based in NYC originally from Tulsa Oklahoma. Her practice consists of painting, sculpture, writing and community building. She is currently a resident at Governors Island through RU focusing on installation. She also has an upcoming solo exhibition in Basel, Switzerland this August. This workshop speaks to the complexities of how the artist perceives the world around her as an international being, and methodology for approaching her art practice.

RU is grateful for the partnership with Governors Island Arts.
