About this event

This 8 week course (August 25- October 25 2025)will be useful to any paraprofessional working in an environment where you may interact and or support someone with a physical, intellectual and/or developmental disability. This course will explore the necessary technical knowledge to support social skills and integration, adaptation, self-dependence, health, safety, nutrition, recreation, leisure and communication for persons with disabilities. Topics covered include behavior management, functional skills, infection control, individual program planning and implementation and independent living.

This course satisfies requirements for Part II of the San Diego Regional Center’s Residential Specialist Certificate.

NOTE, this is an 8 week college-level course. Participants should expect to devote 4-10 hours per week to course work.

Mode of Instruction: HYBRID; Online Materials and Assignments with Grossmont CampusClassroom Meetings during the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks of class.

About Our Instructors

Thomas Carr, MS:

Tom has been working directly with adults with Intellectual Disabilities for more than 25 years. Throughout his career in the field, he has been part of numerous programs committed to empowering individuals with I/DD to realize their full potential. He received a Master's in Rehab Counseling from San Diego State University with an emphasis in counseling. He taught Disability and Society at Grossmont College from 2006-2009, with both in person and virtual instruction modalities. Tom is passionate to share with everyone that a disability is not what defines a person, and we should all emprace each other in spite of our differences and disabilities.
