Abstract: In this paper, I explore the dynamic relationship between academia and activism. Drawing on the experiences of academics and students at risk around the world, I examine how universities respond in diverse ways to those who speak and act on contentious issues. I examine how understandings of academic freedom, scholar activism, and critical theorising shape the spaces in which academics and students participate in social and political transformation. I explore ways in which academics and students have navigated the risks involved in their work, and how universities and civil society groups have offered them refuge and solidarity.
