Is this group only for those recovering from religious trauma?

While our primary focus is on supporting those affected by religious trauma, we welcome anyone from the LGBTQ+ community seeking a safe and inclusive space to discuss faith, spirituality, identity, or simply to connect with others.

Do I need to pay to attend?

No, our programs and services are completely free of charge. However, we welcome donations to help us continue providing these valuable resources and support to our community.

Why are members called Travelers?

This term reflects the journey each individual is on—whether it's a journey of healing, faith, self-discovery, or personal growth. We believe that life, faith, and identity are ongoing, ever-evolving paths, and as Travelers, we support one another as we navigate these complexities together.

Where Can I Park?

Street parking is the best FREE option There is plenty of parking surrounding the building and right across the street on Ogden and East Laurel.

Who can join the group?

This group is open to anyone in the LGBTQ+ community who is navigating religious trauma, faith deconstruction, or seeking a supportive community. Allies who are interested in learning and supporting are also welcome.

What should I expect during the group sessions?

Lled by certified LGBTQ+ mental health professionals. You'll have the opportunity to share your experiences (if you feel comfortable), participate in guided discussions, and engage in healing activities. Each session is designed to offer support, validation, and resources tailored to your journey.

Are the sessions confidential?

Yes, absolutely. We prioritize the privacy and confidentiality of all Travelers. Our sessions are designed to be a safe space, and we do not record any meetings. Additionally, all discussions are moderated to maintain respect and inclusivity.

Will there be refreshment provided?

Yes for all in-person events there will be light snacks and beverages provided. (If you have any allergies please let us know)

What if I am running late? Can I still join?

Typically more than 15 minutes late could be a disruption to the group, however its best to contact a facilitator as exceptions can be made.

Do I have to attend every session?

Not at all! You’re welcome to join as often as you like. However our conversations are flexible so they do connect and grow on each other, we do offer previous recordings to our current members.

What is Flaming for Jesus?

Flaming for Jesus (FFJ) is a non-denominational, non-religious, LGBTQ+ led 501(c)3 nonprofit organization nurturing the spiritual and mental well being of LGBTQ+ individuals affected by religious trauma and discrimination.

Are there any rules I need to follow?

Group Norms are reviewed at the start of each group, but in general: Be kind and respectful to all participants. Maintain confidentiality—what is shared in the group stays in the group. No hate speech, discrimination, or trolling will be tolerated. Be mindful of others' experiences and perspectives.

What kind of resources will be available?

We provide access to a curated library of articles, videos, podcasts, and other resources that support LGBTQ+ mental health and recovery from religious trauma. These resources are shared within our community to help you on your healing journey.

Can I get one-on-one support?

Yes! We offer confidential one-on-one sessions with certified Mental Health Peer Specialists who have experience with LGBTQ+ issues and religious trauma. These sessions are free but require prior booking.

What topics are covered in the Discord Server?

Our community-led discussions cover a wide range of topics, from faith deconstruction, spirituality, and healing from religious trauma, to lighter subjects like anime, music, books, and LGBTQ+ pop culture. We encourage members to suggest topics that interest them!

How can I stay updated on future events and activities?

Empowering Travelers to heal, connect, and Rise Above adversity through peer support, educational workshops, and community-building activities.

Members of Rise Above are referred to as Travelers, as we are all on the journey toward healing, understanding, and acceptance together. Led by a Travel Guide, a self-identifying LGBTQ+ Mental Health Peer Specialist with shared lived experiences, we promote healing by providing a supportive environment for individuals to process their trauma, rebuild their self-esteem, and develop a positive sense of identity.

People choose to travel with Rise Above for various reasons, including finding solace, healing and growth, finding support, theological discourse, and connecting with others who have shared experiences.

By offering emotional, spiritual, and mental support, we create an inclusive community where everyone feels seen, supported, accepted, valued and empowered to Rise Above.
