North Jersey RC&D’s Regenerative Farm Network (RFN-NJ) will be hosting a hybrid workshop on Budgeting for Farm Conservation Practices. The workshop will be on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023 from 9:30am to 3:00pm, led by Keth Dickinson from Farm Credit East.

This one-day workshop will allow farmers to delve into Farm Business 101 and Budgeting. Participants will discuss and consider the financial implications of farm conservation practices (e.g. cover cropping, rotational grazing, grazing cover crops, no-tilling, roller crimping) for a variety of farm types (livestock, commodity crops, vegetables).

Topics for the Workshop will include:

Budgeting, Partial Budgeting
Gross Margin Analysis
Profitability Analysis

The workshop will be held in-person at the Hunterdon County LIBRARY.

A virtual option will also be available, but the event is designed for in-person attendance. Attendees are encouraged to attend in-person for a better experience, but North Jersey RC&D remains committed to offering real-time, virtual opportunities when possible.

Pizza lunch will be provided free of charge. Alternatively, please feel free to bring your own lunch, there is a microwave. There will not be time to go off-site to get lunch. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided.

Keith Dickinson Bio

Keith Dickinson is a Business Consultant with Farm Credit East, ACA. His territory includes all of New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley region of New York. Keith works with farmers and other agricultural business owners to assist them with the planning and management of their businesses. Specific areas of focus for his consulting practice include business planning, profitability analysis, estate and farm succession planning, and business entity selection and management.

Prior to his employment with Farm Credit East, Keith worked as an Agricultural Business Management Educator with Penn State Extension, and as a Farm Business Management Extension Agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension. Keith holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics, both from Virginia Tech. Keith is a Certified Financial Planner™ Professional, and has completed the Financial Planning Certificate program at Florida State University. Keith lives on the family grain and vegetable farm where he was raised in Stow Creek Township in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

Apply for the Follow-up One-to-One Technical Assistance Opportunities:

At least five RFN-NJ members will have the opportunity for two 1:1 consultations with Keith Dickinson to prepare an annual farm budget. The first consultation will go over goals and finances. The second meeting will review the prepared budget.

North Jersey RC&D, through the NRCS Equity Conservation Cooperative Agreement that funds the RFN-NJ, will cover over 90% of the cost for the consultations (estimated at $2,000). The farmer cost-share required is $190 for this service. At least three previous years of financial records in electronic format (Quickbooks or Centerpoint) is requested. Hand-written records or other electronic general ledger systems may be accepted at an additional expense.

This opportunity is open to all RFN-NJ members in the NJ RC&D service area. Farmers who fall under NRCS’ definition of Historically Underserved will have priority. Any members taking part in this opportunity must also take part in the full-day workshop.
