Overview

Annual Typophiles Holiday Luncheon with Jerry Kelly

Few historical Romans have been as influential in traditional typography as Francesco Griffo’s seminal type used in De Aetna and his first-ever Italic, both cut for Aldus Manutius. Jerry Kelly will examine their lasting legacy, its revivals from Monotype Bembo to Adobe Aldine, and his own revival, newly adopted as the proprietary type by The Grolier Club.

Jerry Kelly is a calligrapher, book designer, and type designer. His work has been honored numerous times, and his book designs have been selected more than thirty times for the AIGA “Fifty Books of the Year.” In 2015 he was presented with the 28th Goudy Award from RIT.Kelly has served as Chairman of the American Printing History Association, President of The Typophiles, and an active member of several committees at The Grolier Club. He has written numerous articles and books on the subjects of calligraphy, typography, and book design, including The Noblest Roman: The Centaur Types of Bruce Rogers (co-written with Misha Beletsky), winner of the Bibliographical Society of America's award for best book on a typographic subject. Before starting his own business in 1998, Kelly was Vice President of The Stinehour Press, preceded by a decade as designer at A.
