 We Can Help.

A Framework for K-12 Science Education challenges us to deeply integrate engineering design into all disciplines at every level. Engineering and technology are featured alongside the disciplines to “reflect the importance of understanding the human-built world and to recognize the value of better integrating the teaching and learning of science, engineering, and technology”. What do the NGSS really say when it comes to engineering and design and what are the “big ideas’ students should be working on? The focus of this workshop is to build understanding and share strategies to integrate engineering design as presented in NGSS and in the Frameworks. Through hands-on experiences with JASON resources, participants will journey through the process of defining and delimiting engineering problems, how models can be used to develop and refine possible solutions, and using methods that may help to optimize a design. Though concrete examples are explored from the physical and earth sciences, the emphasis is on the tools and strategies to be applied with any content, and in any discipline. Participants will walk away with concrete tools and strategies to test out in the classroom. During part 2, participants will have opportunities to share experiences, challenges, recommended modifications, and ideas for further NGSS unit development.

JASON Learning is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and educating students everywhere through real science and exploration. JASON’s award-winning educational resources are currently free for all public schools in CT through the CT Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Lessons are routed in real-world application & phenomena, and address three dimensional teaching and learning. Learn how to take full advantage of the free resources, tools, and/or strategies that can be included in NGSS units of instruction. Each of the following professional development offerings is a two-day program. Participants should plan on attending both days. Participants may attend all four programs if desired.
