Research Data Collection with Raspberry Pi and the Sense HAT
Overview
UC Love Data Week Series
Unlock Your Research Potential with Raspberry Pi
Are you interested in experimental design, data analysis, or building custom scientific tools? This beginner-friendly workshop provides the practical skills you need to transition from theoretical concepts to hands-on research. We'll utilize the powerful Raspberry Pi single-board computer and the all-in-one Sense HAT (Sensor Hardware Attached on Top) to create a versatile, low-cost data acquisition system.
Key Learning Outcomes for Future Academic Success:
Applied Python Programming: Learn the core logic and syntax of Python, the most in-demand language for scientific computing, data science, and academic research.
High-Quality Data Collection: Understand how to properly interface with and sample digital sensors to collect reliable and reproducible data on:
Environmental Monitoring (Temperature & Humidity): Essential for climate studies, plant biology, and indoor air quality experiments.
Motion Tracking (Gyroscope): Fundamental for robotics, motion analysis, structural engineering, and physics experiments.
Feedback & Visualization: Gain experience in creating simple yet powerful visual feedback systems by programming the 8x8 LED matrix. This is a basic step toward designing user interfaces and data visualization dashboards for your future projects.
Bridging Theory and Practice: Move beyond simulations and learn to build a physical system that generates and processes its own data—a critical skill for any STEM field.
This workshop is ideal for anyone looking to acquire foundational skills for a future in engineering, computer science, or data-driven research, or just for fun to learn about raspberry pi.
