Join us for a reparative archival description workshop facilitated by Stephen R. Curley, Director of Digital Archives at the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, and Jennifer Garcon, Ph.D., steering member of Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia. This workshop will address the importance of repairing archival descriptions through the use of ethical approaches in order to be more inclusive of communities who have been historically marginalized. The practice of reparative description seeks to address harmful practices that not only continue to erase and marginalize the histories of communities of color, but also the existing structures that force users to search through archives with negative search terms.

Curley and Garcon will present on their experience with metadata remediation. After the presentations, workshop attendees will be split into two breakout rooms for a 20-minute participatory activity. During the breakout session, attendees will have the opportunity to brainstorm approaches to repairing descriptions for their own collections or drafting protocols for these descriptions. The presentations will be recorded and posted to Rare Book School's YouTube channel. The breakout sessions will not be recorded.

The workshop seeks to educate archivists, librarians, fellows, community members, and students on the importance of reparative description and to give you action plans on how to create and implement reparative workflows and protocols in your work. Workshop attendees are expected to actively share and participate throughout the event.
