Reminiscent & Tiny But Mighty Dual Opening Reception
Overview
All of our opening receptions are Free & Open to the public, however, we love when our guests RSVP and give us a ball park of how many to expect! Guests who RSVP will be entered into a raffle for the evenings door prize.
Reminiscent is an exhibit at d’Art Center that features contemporary impressionistic paintings from across the country. Impressionism is a style of art that uses light and color to capture a moment in time rather than a realistic image. Impressionism emerged in the early 1860s as some artists began to focus more on the natural sunlight and work “en plein air” which lead to dabbling and broken brushwork due to working quickly in an effort to capture the shifting natural scenes. Some pioneers of impressionism include Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cezanne. This exhibit will feature works from contemporary artists in this style. The d’Art Center received just under 150 entries for Reminiscent from 20 states. Just 50 works from 29 artists and 16 states were selected for this exhibit, including 8 Virginians.
This is a juried exhibition, and it will be curated by Gallery Director Amanda Bradley. Award winners will be selected by Juror and Artist, Janice Gay Maker.
Artist Janice Gay Maker is renowned for her exceptional use of color. Throughout her career, spanning multiple mediums including oil paint, oil pastel, and soft pastel, she has consistently produced vibrant, passionate vistas from observation of natural and urban landscapes. As her subjects evolve, Ms Gay Maker continues to employ her distinctive color palette in her compositions of landscapes and portraits.
Tiny But Mighty is an annual nationally juried exhibition of artworks that are no larger/longer than 8” in their longest dimension. Artworks in this exhibition can be 2D or 3D. Tiny But Mighty 4 received 350 entries from just under 100 artists from 32 states.
Just 46 pieces from 38 artists and 20 states were selected for this exhibit, including 7 Virginians.
This exhibition will take place in our smaller exhibition space, The Vault, to create a more intimate and close up experience for our patrons. The Vault is a historical bank vault within the center, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk Arts District (The NEON District).
