Remember. Reimagine. Rebuild.
Overview
On January 7th, 2025, the landscape of Malibu, the Palisades and Altadena was forever changed. One year after the devastating Los Angeles fires, Creative Visions invites you to Remember. Reimagine. Rebuild.
Let's come together as a community to reflect and honor the resilience of our friends and neighbors. Join us for an afternoon and evening featuring awards for local heroes and first responders, live music, including a performance by Johnny Guitar Watkin, a block of short films, a panel discussion with the filmmakers and impactful members of our network, community discussion and a reception.
Student representatives from TREEAMS - a student-led movement of healing, hope and action focused on restoring community and reimagining Los Angeles as a greener and more resilient city - will be there to collect stories to help shape generations to come.
Artist Natalie Godinez will be there collecting oral histories of the Palisades community and its resilience to inform her project to preserve the Palisades community's memories through collaborative embroidery, printmaking, and a zine. Read more about Natalie and her project below!
Our film block will feature short documentaries created in response to the Los Angeles fires, as well as stories of resilience. Scroll down to learn more about the short films - including Big Rock Burning and a selection of films from the Ashes to Film Festival.

About the Artists & Films
Natalie M. Godinez is the artist in residence with the Pacific Palisades branch of the LA Public Library through Artists at Work and the LA Department of Arts and Culture. She is working on a project to preserve the Palisades community's memories through collaborative embroidery, printmaking, and a zine. During the event, she will share information about the project and collect oral histories to inform the artwork that will highlight the beautiful Palisades community and its resilience.
Rashad's Bounce Back: The inspiring story of Rashad Rhodes, who, after the LA fires destroyed his workplace and community, dedicates himself to helping local youth displaced by the fires heal from trauma and rebuild their sense of belonging through the unifying power of sports.
Big Rock Burning is an intimate 30 minute documentary exploring the resilient spirit of Malibu's Big Rock community as they rebuild from the ashes of the devastating Palisades Fire, one of America's worst wildfires. The film captures the raw aftermath of a harrowing night when residents were left to fend for themselves after officials deemed the area too dangerous to enter. With no help coming, neighbors turned into first responders; some fighting back flames with garden hoses, others forced to flee through walls of fire.
Rising Above the Ashes: Directed by by Cade Savage Schwartz - Rising Above the Ashes, a documentary about the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires, addresses the question of how people move forward after large-scale natural disasters, looking at the powerful positive effects of resilience, gratitude and community art in supporting individuals and communities as they heal and move forward.
The Life We Have: After 2 decades living with terminal cancer, Rob Shaver made a pact to run a mile a day until he passes away.
AFTERDANCE: This is a mother daughter filmmaking team who lost their home in the Palisades and put together an experimental film that is beautiful.
