Realizing the Value of IP: Practical Applications and Strategies

IP valuation models come up frequently in the context of IP licensing programs, due diligence, venture capital investment, initial public offerings (IPOs), and IP asset sales/liquidations. Three primary economic valuation models (cost valuation; market valuation; and income valuation) may be utilized to assign a value to any asset. However, in the context of IP assets, such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, the execution of many of the well-known models can present challenges.

In this CHIZAI seminar, we are delighted to invite Mauricio Uribe as a distinguished speaker. Our discussion will include a practical discussion of the applicability of the three primary economic valuation models to IP assets. We will also explore how IP licensing programs can be built on the valuations or used to drive increased IP valuation.

Mauricio Uribe is the Chair of the Data Privacy and Protection practice group and the previous chair of the Software/IT and Electrical practice group at Knobbe Martens.

Mauricio is well versed in patent prosecution matters and portfolio development, especially in software, electrical and telecommunication technologies. For more than 15 years, Mauricio has engaged in numerous licensing strategy and license negotiations for various clients, including standard essential patent licensing matters. Mauricio has helped clients set up licensing programs, identify and cultivate essential patent assets, develop responses to licensing offers and develop holistic licensing programs.

Mauricio is also a frequent lecturer on licensing topics including intellectual property valuation and due diligence, trade secrets, data privacy and protection, standards essential patents licensing programs, non-disclosure agreements, employment agreements, open-source software, etc. Mauricio is also a thought leader and frequent lecturer/author on various patent and Copyright topics, emerging technologies (e.g., AI, Distributed Ledger, etc.), trade secret, and additional IP topics.
