In this book-club style writing workshop led by Alisha Acquaye, participants will read and discuss bell hooks’ seminal text, All About Love: New Visions. Each chapter presents piercing and insightful questions and anecdotes that deeply inquire into the roles love plays in our lives. hooks inspires us to contemplate how we define “true” love within the spectrum of relationships we have—spiritual, romantic, familial, social, to name a few. This workshop is for anyone dedicated to the journey of untangling and reconstructing their views on love. We read a chapter a week and write to prompts inspired by each chapter’s themes.

First-time and seasoned readers of the book are welcome—although we do ask that if you do not identify as Black, you abstain from registering.

This is a generative drop-in writing opportunity with a week-to-week sign-up process. Drop-in workshops do not require attendance each week. This workshop is capped at 8 participants per week.

NY Writers Coalition's Black Writers Program is a curated literary experience in which Black writers can generate, develop, and share work in a supportive environment. The program includes themed generative writing workshops, drop-in sessions for prompt-based workshops, professional development panels and lectures, and a community of Black writers to share it all with. We aim to create a writing community that is thoughtful, inspiring, and accessible to Black writers at all stages of the artistic process. Whether you’re a seasoned writer with formal training, a new writer eager to hone your voice, or somewhere in between, all Black writers are welcome and encouraged to sign up.

NYWC’s Black Writers Program has grown—and continues to grow—bigger than we ever imagined. We’re not only proud to provide equitable and accessible workshops for Black writers in NYC, the United States, and beyond, but we also remain committed to paying competitive rates to our workshop leaders, teaching artists, and guest speakers who make this incredible program possible. Unfortunately, the BWP does not yet have institutional funding. We’re working hard to secure the resources we need to continue offering this program—but that won’t be possible without your help.

This workshop offers both free registration and Pay-What-You-Can registration. We welcome contributions in any amount—even $5 makes a world of difference.
